The Floreana remained anchored in Sullivan Bay overnight because today’s destination was close by at around an hours navigation.  Captain and crew managed this short voyage with a minimum of fuss before breakfast.
As is becoming routine, we boarded the dinghies after breakfast and were propelled over to a rocky landing on a new island.  This [...]

Our boat navigated through the night to the island of Santiago, which is not so far from Santa Cruz, where we began our journey.  We anchored in Sullivan Bay, a spot on the east of the island with stunning views of Santiago and Bartolomé islands.  The bay is instantly recognisable because of a pinnacle of [...]

21st November 2008 - Darwin’s Bay
Our boat, the Floreana, travelled though the night to reach the Island of Genovese before breakfast.  Jana and I woke up early to find that we were nearing land.  It took us a little while to get up, washed and dressed in our little cabin at the bottom of the [...]

20th November 2008 - Baltra Channel

Once again we rose early, in order to telephone the mainland and try and blag/sort out our boat trip.  We knew of three boats leaving with empty berths so we decided to move fast and try for a last minute deal.  Columbus travel, based in Quito, were our first choice.  [...]

19th October 2008 - Puerto Ayora
Our early start brought the usual pre-airport panics. Oh no, it’s nearly 7am already – where did you put the sun cream – have you packed the food for the flight – hurry up with breakfast. As usual, we needn’t have worried. Our taxi ride to Quito airport was uneventful [...]

Vamos a Galapagos

Tomorrow morning we are flying to the Galapagos Islands.  This will realise a long held dream for me to visit these isolated islands where so many creatures have speciated over thousands of years.
I can remember as a boy watching David Attenborough describing in his breathless manner the ways in which various plants, shore fish, reptiles [...]

Crossing the Line

We crossed the Equator on Sunday.  I had been looking forward to the moment for a long time, ever since it occurred to me on some wistful afternoon at work in Otley that for the first time in our lives, we would be crossing the line on land.

False Start

Shortly after posting the entry about being disappointed with our first impressions of Ecuador, Jana and I went out to explore the town of Otavalo and had a great time.
We took a taxi from Hostel La Luna, our rather isolated digs, into town to check out alternative accommodation and find something to eat.  The bar/restaurant [...]

Angeblich passieren [...]
